Thus begins the great Mac experiment…
Today I brought home a 17″ iMac to try out. We have a few extra at work and I figured I would see what all the hype was about. Andrew is always saying how much he loves Mac OSX and all its bells and whistles. So far I have taken some funny pictures with the Photo Booth, checked out a few sites in Safari, installed FireFox and changed a few system preferences.
The built in iSight camera and Photo Booth are a really great feature and well integrated. During the initial configuration and customization after the first boot you can actually take a picture of yourself for your profiles Display Picture. I can’t imagine Windows every being able to do something so cool. Just to be fair though having a common hardware platform really makes a lot of things easy.
My first impressions of Safari are not too favorable as you might have guessed (by the FireFox note). The first problem was resizing the windows which seemed overly complicated. Why is the default width 800px? I’m probably too used to the way windows works and I have to admit that making it difficult to maximize the browser is a step forward. The next issue was when I started this post in WordPress. There is a JavaScript bug in Safari that forced WordPress to remove the quickTag links in the writing interface (but only for Safari). Also the nice looking WordPress button (input type=”button”) links aren’t nicely styled and instead are the standard Mac rounded beveled ones. Anyway I downloaded and installed FireFox (which has left a wierd thing that won’t let me eject it on my desktop) and haven’t ventured back yet.
So that is it for now, I’ll drop a few notes in future posts as I get acclimated. Now where is Photoshop in this thing? Hmmm…
Update: Megan has a great article about fixing titles in WordPress that I recommend you check out. She makes some great points about its relevance to accessibility and SEO.

[...] I thought that was an odd comment as well. I’m also hearing a lot of excitement about Apple from regular people in my office. One of our managers got a new Mac at home and loves it, and others are raving about the one we just got from the tech area to play with. Others in the tech group have been trying them out at home too. People are really excited about Apple these days, and I think that will carry over into their desktop market, especially now that they aren’t as expensive. Over the summer they couldn’t keep the little laptops in stock at the campus computer store. [...]
