Blackberry MP3 Player Instructions
February 4, 2007 |
I have previously commented on the Blackberry Pearl in an unfavourable but not totally bad light. I stand behind my position, this device will only satisfy a select market. That being said I wrote this up to give people a guide to using the media player on the Pearl as an MP3 player. By default it plays one file at a time which it not very useful.
Note: In order to use the Pearl as an MP3 player you must have added a MicroSD card to store the music on since the device memory is insufficient.
Loading music on the device
Windows with Desktop Manager
- Install Desktop Manager software from the included Blackberry CD
- Plug in the device using the USB cable. On screen you should receive a message about using the memory card in mass storage mode or not. Select NO
- Open Desktop Manager
- Double click Media Manager
- On the Blackberry side (marked A) select Media Card then blackberry then Music
- On the local computer side (marked B) find your music collection
- Select the song or folder you wish to upload and click the right pointing arrow (marked C)
- Once the music is copied you can close Desktop Manager and disconnect the device
MacOSX and Windows
- Plug in the device using the USB cable. On screen you should receive a message about using the memory card in mass storage mode or not. Select YES
- On MacOSX a new drive will appear (probably called NO NAME). On Windows a new USB drive will be found
- Open the drive, the blackberry folder and finally the music folder.
- Copy and paste your songs to the drive
- On MacOSX eject the drive. On Windows click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the system tray (grey box with left facing green arrow) then click Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device
- Disconnect the device
Playing music on the device
- Open the Media Center on the device (film reel icon) select Music then Media Card
- Clicking a song will play it on the built-in speaker or on the headphones if they are connected
- Clicking on a song to play it will only play that one song. When it is over the music will stop or repeat
- To play all songs or to play all songs including sub-folders you must click the menu key with a song highlighted then click Play Folder or Play All respectively
- To shuffle your playlist click the menu key while the player is playing and select Shuffle from the list

Hi I am just learning how to use the mp3 player on my blackberry pearl. It was quite a learning curve to download the music on to the phone. It is finally done!
I just attempted to plug my headset into the phone and it does not fit. Is there a specific type of headphone jack that fits in this phone? Thanks Sue
Hey, not sure if this applies to the Pearl, but I discovered (quite accidentally) on my Curve that if I push N it will play the next track, and if I push P the previous track plays.
Also, if your songs have ID3 tags in them, you can just select Artist or Album, then select “All” in the next screen, it will play all the songs by the artist or in the Album, no need to do Play Folder.
